  • Access: Güéjar Sierra via Granada - the town of Güéjar-Sierra (1000m) is very easily reached from Granada city in 30 mins via the A-395 (Cenes de la Vega and Pinos-Genil)
  • Start: Barranco de San Juan. Take the main road east of Güéjar-Sierra well signposted to the Verada Estrella. This narrow road drops steadily down to the Rio Genil and passes through a series of tunnels on it’s way to the trailhead where there is a restaurant and car park. Suitable for saloon cars
  • End: Same as start

Route Description

Start from the bar at the road end just opposite a bridge over the River Genil. The Barranco de San Juan joins the river at this point. The main effort on this hiking tour is straight after the start as you head uphill on graded tracks until you meet the Cortijo de Hoyo at nearly 1800m. From here on the hike is much easier as you contour the hillside high above the surrounding valleys. Gradually as you turn to the south the views open up and the magnificent high mountains of the Sierra Nevada come into view.

A little further and we reach the old Cortijos de Hornillo, a good place to break for lunch. This is a spectacular place! There is time for a little exploration further south before a return on a steep zig zag path down to the main Vereda de Estrella path in the valley bottom. An hour level walking from here and you are back at the trailhead and ready to enjoy a cold beer at the bar alongside the river!
